What is the ascendant and where are the houses in the sky? Your ascendant is always the eastern horizon, where land meets the sky, and the natural point of sunrise. This is also the visible first half of your first house.
Seeing Your Ascendant & Houses in the Sky
“This is also the visible first half of your first house.”
When you were born, it may have been nighttime. It may have been daytime. Maybe you were born midday, but your #ascendant is still the Eastern horizon. Peering at the East horizon sky from left to right, you can envision the imaginary box of the 12th house, then the 11th, and 10th is directly overhead. Descending to the western horizon is the 9th house, 8th, and half of the 7th house - the point of sunset.
Applying to Your Chart
When you were born, any planets in houses 1 (first half), 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7 (second half) with their corresponding zodiac signs were visible in the sky - though harder to see for daytime births. The remaining houses and planets are “underneath” the Earth. This has some deeper meaning. The houses in the visible part of the sky represent more visible parts of your life: career, social life, dharma, university, income, travels, half of your visible self, and half of your business or marriage life. The houses “underneath” represent your more private self, relationship life, home, savings, investments, children, illness, enemies, and personal hobbies. Where do you have most of your planets?
